Purpose

The purpose of this grant is to promote and support innovative educational scholarship that is designed and implemented by members of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP). If selected, grantees will receive a total of $2,500 to support the completion of an educational research project. This grant opportunity is supported by the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry.

Background and Rationale

ADMSEP is committed to encouraging educational scholarship among its members. The Research and Scholarship Task Force and the Education Scholars Program have been established to support this mission. This grant will provide an additional mechanism to promote education scholarship. The goal of this initiative is to fund a project that has promise, but may otherwise not be initiated or completed due to the lack of monetary support.

Questions may be sent to the ADMSEP Research & Scholarship Co-Chairs, Jeff Cluver, M.D. (cluverj@musc.edu) or Catherine Lewis, M.D. (catlewis@uchc.edu).

Requirements

- Proposals must be related to psychiatric undergraduate medical education. Studies that address issues that span both undergraduate and graduate medical education will be considered.

- Awardees must plan to have at least preliminary data to present by the annual ADMSEP meeting. The scope of work for the project should be reasonable and practical, such that it is feasible to complete in 12-18 months.

- Proposals must include a detailed description of how the grant money will be used to support the project. (i.e., the purchase of materials, standardized patients, statistician time, computer software, equipment, medical student research support etc.)

General Guidelines for Proposals

- Projects may include educational scholarship related to curriculum development (e.g., design, implementation, evaluation of the impact of innovative curricula), development and validation of assessment or evaluation tools, development and evaluation of instructional materials, or other research focused on enhancing undergraduate psychiatric education.

- Projects that include collaboration between ADMSEP members at different institutions will be given priority.

- All proposals must have IRB approval (if human subjects are involved) or be designated as IRB exempt, in order to be eligible. At a minimum, the applicant must demonstrate evidence that the proposed protocol has been submitted to their IRB at the time of submission.

- Projects may have more than one investigator and/or take place at more than one institution, but the projected use of the grant funding must be delineated clearly in the proposal. Funding must be used to support the research project and cannot be used for travel to meetings or for salary support (except for relevant consultation e.g., biostatistics).

- Pilot projects designed to generate preliminary data (e.g., to establish proof of concept or feasibility) needed for a larger grant submission are encouraged.

- Applicants at the level of Assistant Professor and lower are encouraged to seek mentorship and identify any mentoring relationship in their application. In addition to local faculty, ADMSEP members from the Research and Scholarship Task Force are available for this purpose, and a member of the Task Force will be assigned as a project contact.

- Projects that are already funded through other grants or organizations, or that have been previously published, cannot be considered. However, proposals that include work that is the next step, iteration, or continuation of a larger project will be considered.

Review Process

- All submissions will be reviewed by the ADMSEP Scholarship Grant Review Committee/Research and Scholarship Task Force. All submissions will receive feedback to allow for future revisions for other funding opportunities, including future submissions to ADMSEP. The Review Committee reserves the right to ask for changes in the grant before funding is awarded.

- The Committee will give highest priority to those projects that adhere to all proposal requirements and guidelines, are appropriate in scope, have an appropriate budget, and have the potential for generalizability and/or future expansion.

- The Review Committee will review all of the required application materials (see below) and make a determination based on the quality and feasibility of the project, as well as the quality of the supporting documentation.

- Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Acquiring Funds, Progress and Final Reports

- The principal investigator of the funded proposal will submit a one-page progress report annually to the Grant Review Committee following the awarding of funds, until the project is completed. This report will include 1) progress to date, 2) barriers, 3) confirmation of current IRB approval if not already approved, 4) budget expenditures, and 5) anticipated activity before the next update, including presentation & dissemination plans.

- Awardees will be provided with a project contact on the Research and Scholarship Task Force.

- All presentations of work funded by this grant must acknowledge ADMSEP as a sponsor of the work.

Application Instructions & Materials

- All required materials should be submitted in one complete package/file and in receipt of the Review Committee by the deadline of August 15th.

- Applications should be submitted to the ADMSEP Research and Scholarship Grant Review Committee via email to Gary L. Beck Dallaghan (gbeck@unmc.edu)

- Applicants will be notified by the Review Committee no later than September 30th.
